When I was a kid, some 70 years ago, my grandfather grew a lot of cotton. In those days cotton was all picked by hand. Pickers would drag a long sack, maybe 4-5’ long, pick cotton and stuff it into the sack. When the bag was full it would be taken to the cotton trailer where it was weighed on a scale just like this. The bag had 2 straps, which the worker put over his shoulders to drag the sack. These 2 straps would be put over the hook at the bottom of the scale and weighed. The grower would either pay the worker in cash at that time or mark the weight on the worker’s card and he would be paid at the end of the day. Sometimes full families worked picking cotton. It was very arduous and low paying.
