Performs audits in Dinuba area and in various locations in central and southern California with limited travel into Arizona


The Cooperative Agricultural Support Services (CASS) is a Joint Powers Authority that provides efficient and cost effective support for activities carried out by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Under the direction of federal or state Inspection and Compliance staff, CASS employees participate in and support a rigorous science-based Food Safety system that protects public health by reducing potential sources of contamination and establishes a culture of food safety on the farm.

The incumbent in this position provides program support within a voluntary, audit based compliance program established to reduce potential sources of contamination in fruits, vegetables or tree nuts. The incumbent must use initiative and knowledge of federal, state or industry good agricultural and good handling standards as well as conforming to federal, state and CASS policies in carrying out work activities.

Under the direction of federal, or state staff,the incumbent will also grade agricultural products for growers, shippers, packers and processors throughout California.

Education: 2 year or 4 year Degree in Agricultural or Scientific Field(Food Safety, Biology, Agriculture, Business, Statistics) Preferred but not required

Experience: 3 Years experience in an agriculture related field, such as applicable farm experience, agricultural commodity grading, marketing, food processing, quality assurance, process or systems auditing; familiar with ISO standards

Under direction, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, the incumbent in this position works in the Shipping Point/Food Safety-Leafy Green Auditing Inspection programs. In addition to food safety auding activities, the incumbent in this position will also perform shipping point, state and/or federal commodity inspections using state or industry standards; and maintain records of samplng and inspection of testing results and issue certificates based upon the results of the grading. Extensive travel required.

II. Perform Food Safety Verification Audits

Audits grower and handler records to ensure compliance with an approved plan.

Writes reports following audits

Completes audit checklist and note pertinent observations

Communicates with handler or grower representatives throughout the audit process.

Communicates with handlers and addresses necessary food safety issues.

Responsible for maintaining and carrying necessary documents to conduct audits.

Maintains professionalism at all times.

Continuous training in food safety related to audits.

Communicates with handlers and addresses necessary food safety issues.

III. Grade Agricultural Commodities

Performs shipping point, institution, military, or federal inspections using federal, state or industry standards.
Maintaining records of sampling and inspection or testing results; and Issues certificates based upon the results of commodity grading.


Duties for the job are performed inside or outside of buildings. Weather, temperature, lighting and noise levels may constantly vary. Work in outside environments of rain, mud, wind, cold, heat. The incumbent may regularly work with or around machinery or motorized equipment, work in a noisy environment and be exposed to dust, pollen, moisture and temperature extremes. Driving a vehicle, as well as entering and exiting the vehicle throughout the workday. Performs auditing duties in active production areas with harvest personnel, combined with active heavy machinery in same locations. Performs audits in cooling facility and works around heavy equipment.


· The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with industry; Work independently and as a team in outside locations from headquartered office, Communicates with supervisor daily, work well under pressure; work cooperatively with other staff members in completing designated work while meeting required deadlines. Continuous throughout the year, and extended stays at various locations. May be required to travel with short notice. Performs audits in various locations in California and limited travel into Arizona. Use personal vehicle for work. A valid California driver license and acceptable driving record required. Current DMV required at time of interview.


· The incumbent in this position will be required, with or without reasonable accommodation, to stand and walk constantly, lift up to 20 pounds on a very frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; use repetitive arm and wrist motions; bend, stoop, twist, reach; and, maintain visual acuity and possess normal color vision.
